French duo BCBG consisting of Mariette Auvray (Pussy Patrol, Eyes Behind, Water Sark) and Samuel Trifot (Kikiilimikilii, Feu Machin, Dorcelsiushe) were formed in Brazil at a residency program in 2012 between two friends having met and played shows in separate bands in and around the Paris underground/experimental scene.
This Brazilian revelation spawned the early single and video, “Sailors Wife” which served as a document for the early jamming and rehearsals.
Following European and North American tours (USA/Canada with Opale and Ensemble Economique) they released the EP Chapelle Abstraite lead by the hypnotic and borderline transcendental single “White Trees” with a film clip created by Australian film maker/musician Angie Garrick (Circle Pit, Ruined Fortune, Straight Arrows)
Taking wide ranging influences from 70s Turkish psychedelic music, Berlin Techno, Dalida, Etienne Daho and French Pop, BCBG create a unique sound lead by the soaring vocals of Mariette Auvray summoning icons such as Francoise Hardy and Brigitte Fontaine but trapped in some deep dance floor spell drenched in reverb, delay and ecstasy. Trifot and Auvray collectively compose the backdrop of melody and madness through dueling keys, synths and throbbing drums. They burst from one sound, effect and mood to another but with a seemingly natural flow and progression that doesn’t make it so unexpected.
It sounds like there’s more than two people involved but there really isn’t.
It could be something of an organic partnership that invents these delicate trances.
Their latest release is Noces d'Argent 7" featuring the tracks
Jaune De Naples and Désert Narquois
recorded in Berlin and Agey a small village in Burgundy.
The magic of Jaune De Naples (meaning, The yellow of Naples) begins with a playful lullaby-like melody before bursting into a windscreen projection of the seasons change. Désert Narquois feels like a traditional Arabic ceremony if it was being held at an early 90s house club in Manchester.
The 7” sounds like where it was recorded, the wild all night clubs of Berlin mixed with the naturalistic, wondrously quite and mythical environment of a village in Burgundy with more cows than people. BCBG create a unique world with influences stretching far and beyond countries, cultures and time periods and deliver it all in their native tongue.
Released by Australian "kinda" Label Glenlivet-A-Gogh (distributed by: AUS Repressed Records, USA Easter Bilby) is a sign of what’s to come and the future is looking brighter than the Jaune de Naples.
7” also included bonus download of “Astral Cities” and a cover by Yugo Solo (Rien, Câlin)
